Toyo-Thai wins commercial-scale carbon capture and utilization contract

Toyo-Thai Corporation Public Company Limited (TTCL) has announced that its U.S. subsidiary, Toyo-Thai-USA Corporation (TTUS), has been awarded a $117 million construction contract by Austin, Texas-based Skyonic Corporation for a new commercial scale carbon capture and utilization plant.  Toyo-Thai will be constructing the Capitol SkyMine plant at a cement factory in San Antonio, Texas.  The announcement was made at a contract signing ceremony at TTCL’s corporate headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand.

TTCL will be providing Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services to the project.  The corporation has also invested $ 1 million in Skyonic in order to support the project.

“We are excited to be providing EPC services to the SkyMine® plant,” said Toyo-Thai Corporation PCL President & CEO, Hironobu Iriya. “This is a unique opportunity to showcase our expertise in the international energy arena by partnering with Skyonic on a project that has huge implications for both energy and the environment.”

Mr. Iriya noted that while Toyo-Thai has previous experience in the U.S. market in the areas of Engineering and Procurement Service and Construction Supervision, this is the corporation’s first project in the U.S. as an EPC provider.

“When we looked at EPC partners for the nation’s first commercial scale carbon capture and utilization plant, Toyo-Thai’s experience really stood out to us,” said Joe Jones, founder and CEO of Skyonic. “The company’s construction and engineer expertise will be very valuable as we bring SkyMine® to the commercialization stage alongside our partners and investors.”

Skyonic’s electrolytic carbon capture technology, SkyMine®, will selectively capture CO2, acid gases and heavy metals from the flue gas of the Capitol Aggregates Cement Plant, where the Capitol SkyMine facility will be retrofitted. The captured pollutants will be mineralized into solid products, including sodium bicarbonate, which are stored, transported and sold as safe, stable solids. Process byproducts include hydrochloric acid and bleach, which can also be sold into the market. By producing valuable products using low-cost chemical inputs and operating at energy-efficient conditions, SkyMine® captures CO2 at a substantially lower cost than other carbon capture technologies, allowing industrial emitters to turn a profit from reduced emissions.
